September 11, 2001.

You know exactly where you were. You will always know exactly where you were. That's how big an effect the day had on everyone's life forever.

11 years ago today, the United States of America was victimized by the worst terrorist attack in our country's history. Countless innocent lives were taken at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Shanksville, Penn. (United Flight 93).

Whether you knew a victim, were or knew a volunteer in the aftermath, the day changed you in some way. It was an event that brought our country closer together.

The New York and Washington D.C. area sports teams rushed to help, donating food, water, time and effort to the cleanup, but it was their return to the field, or in this case the ice, that helped fans get their minds off the tragedy and return to everyday life.

For the Rangers, that day was October 7, 2001 at Madison Square Garden vs. the Buffalo Sabres.

Then Rangers' captian Mark Messier reflected on the day, and how the New York City police and fire departments united as one.

The crowed rallied behind the Rangers as they won in dramatic fashion. Brian Leetch scored the game-winning overtime goal and helped those in the arena and watching at home, at least for a moment, begin to overcome their sadness and anger.

We at Rangers 101 would like to take a moment to remember everyone lost on that day and thank all those in the relief effort since that day. May God bless the lost, their families, the emergency responders and our military who continue to protect our freedoms and our way of life.
