The Connecticut Whale lost to the St. John's Ice Caps 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the XL Center and fall to 0-2 to begin the year. Not the way the Whale wanted to being the year, especially at home.
The game featured four power play goals, including both that were scored by Connecticut.
Newbury netted his third goal of the year in the first period. He received a pass in the left circle and his shot deflected off the skate of goaltender Mark Dekanich (35 saves) and into the goal. Sean Collins and Chris Kreider assisted on the goal.
St. John's scored the lone non-power play goal later in the period when Maxime Macenauer buried his first goal of the season against Whale goaltender Scott Stajcer (22 saves), making his first start in net.
In the second period, both teams traded power play goals. Jean scored first on a rebound opportunity, and Zach Redman scored for the Ice Caps.
The game was square heading into the third period, but Spencer Machacek scored the game-winning goal just less than eight minutes into the frame.
The Whale will now begin a three-game road trip to Norfolk (Oct. 19 and 20) and Albany (Oct. 24) before returning home to host the Hershey Bears on Fri., Oct. 26 at the XL Center.
