RANGERS 101

The New York Rangers built a 3-0 lead throughout the game at the TD Garden vs. the Boston Bruins, but were unable to hang onto it and the game went to a shootout. Captain Ryan Callahan scored the game winner, putting a wrist shot past Tuukka Rask to seal a 4-3 win and two points for the Blueshirts.

It's the second time the Rangers beat Boston in some form of overtime as Marian Gaborik scored in the five minute extra period the last time these teams net at Madison Square Garden.

In the shootout, Callahan scored, as did Rick Nash, on what was an excellent move around Nash. Henrik Lundqvist made three stops, but Brad Marchand was able to beat him glove side.

The Rangers survived to get themselves their third straight victory. They now are 7-5-0 (14 points) while the Bruins also improve themselves to 8-1-2 (18 points).

Carl Hagelin opened the scoring for the Rangers after a beautiful play by Nash to get him the puck (see above video). The Bruins turned the puck over the neutral zone and Nash was able to move in, deke around a defender and slide the puck to Hagelin while falling down. All Hagelin needed to do was hit the empty net, which he did to make it 1-0 Rangers.

In the second, the Rangers took advantage of another Bruin turnover. This time, Derek Stepan stole the puck in the neutral zone, walked into the zone and sniped a shot past Rask on the glove side. The goal deflated the TD Garden as the Rangers took a 2-0 lead, despite being heavily outnumbered in shots.

Anton Stralman made it 3-0 Rangers right after the Bruins killed off a 5-on-3 penalty — so the Rangers went 0-for-4 on the power play tonight, now 4-for-44 on the season.

The goal really quieted the crowd, but more than halfway through the period, the Bruins finally got on the board. David Krejci put the puck past Lundqvist right after the Bruins power play had expired — they also went 0-for-4 tonight (4-for-43 on the year).

As the game was drawing to a close, the Bruins pulled Rask and promptly scored with 1:31 to play. Nathan Horton put home a rebound, making it a 3-2 game. With Rask still pulled, Marchand was able to beat Lundqvist with 43 seconds remaining to knot the game, 3-3, and electrify the home crowd.

Overtime was very nerve racking as both teams had great opportunities to score. The closest may have come for Ryan McDonagh as his shot was deflected by Rask and just went wide.

Lundqvist was amazing in net for the Rangers all game, but was beat right at the end of regulation there. He made 37 saves in the game and was the reason the Rangers were even in a position to win. Overall, it was a solid game for New York, but they were caught in a situation where they were looking not to lose, and it cost them a win in regulation.

PS: Hope this was their last too many men on the ice penalty of the season. Enough is enough.
