ESPN's Katie Strang says it's easy that both players come up in discussions with Glen Sather today which will definitely start the rumor mill. Another attributing factor is the fact that Adrian Dater has said Rangers' scouts have been at the past few Colorado Avalanche games.
#NYRThis will likely cause some speculation re: Zuccarello, but don't forget Newport reps Ryan O'Reilly also.— Katie Strang (@KatieStrangESPN) February 28, 2013
Although, it doesn't make much sense as to why the Rangers would be there for Avalanche games as O'Reilly isn't even on the ice. He's a restricted free agent, looking for big time money. The Avs seem more likely to trade the young center, rather than sign him.
A move for O'Reilly doesn't make much sense for New York. He's a great talent, but he doesn't really fit in with the team's needs. He isn't going to light up the score sheet, thus, not worth his asking dollar figure.
Derek Stepan has more points than O'Reilly the past two years, so it seems that O'Reilly wouldn't even be a top-six forward.
As for Zuccarello, Sather said yesterday that he's interested in bringing the forward back to New York. He had 28 points in 44 regular season games this year in the KHL and his current contract has an out clause if the forward wants to return to the NHL.
The tricky part with Zuccarello is that it'll take a one-way deal to bring him back to New York, as he isn't looking to play for the Connecticut Whale anymore. He could be an asset to the team though, as he was a spark for the power play unit last year before breaking his wrist blocking a shot.
He could be worth the risk as he couldn't make the power play any worse.Connecticut Whale, Danny Dekuyser, Derek Stepan, Glen Sather, Hockey, Mats Zuccarello, New York, New York Rangers, Newport Sports, NHL, Ryan O'Reilly, Western Michigan
