Nicholls was signed from the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League and was a teammate of Rangers prospect Shane McColgan. The 6'2", 185-pound winger was originally a seventh-round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010, but they let his rights expire.
He recorded 41 goals and 73 points through 65 games with the Blades this season.
